Youth Rugby

As long ago as 1982 the club realised the impact of reduced school rugby and started, firstly a Mini Section and progressed to a Midi Section as the demand increased. The club are now in the very fortunate position of having built up a highly successful youth section providing rugby facilities and tuition for over 200 local children aged between 7 and 17. Every year there is a drive not only to maintain but increase the numbers, to enable as many children as possible to enjoy the pleasures of a team sport that not only builds character and self discipline, but also provides the opportunity to forge lifelong friendships.
The Midi Section
Midi Rugby is a slightly shortened version of the senior game, with slight variations in the laws to try to ensure the development does everything to promote individual skill and expression, while trying to ensure that the game is fun. The Midi Rugby sections seek to encourage all secondary school pupils in the area of all age groups from first year or S1 to sixth year or U17 to join the Wanderers to take part in training and games, with other primarily from the Glasgow District area, but also further afield. Indeed recent Mid teams have tour abroad in Ireland France and England.
This year tours are arranged for the U18s to Dubai and U15s to Italy. It is an added bonus that this section has developed some excellent teams with some exceptional individual talent that has risen to the ranks of the pathway and district rugby development schemes.

The Mini Section
Mini rugby is the life-blood of our rugby club. It is where we get our Midis and a number of our senior players, so it plays a vital role in the future success of any rugby club. At Wanderers we recognise the need to treat the players well and coach them well, while at the same time instil in them a love for the game. The Mini Rugby sections seek to encourage all primary school pupils in the area of all age groups from primary three to primary seven to join the Wanderers to take part in training and some organised games, Overall, we want the players to enjoy playing, to have fun.
We concentrate on:
- making sure the playing/training envionment is safe for children to play in
- ensuring that all club representatives the children interact with are trusted and friendly - CRB checks are mandatory for all these people
- making sure we have enough suitably qualified coaches that the players allfeel that they are fully taking part
- ensuring parents and carers are involved as much as possible in the running of the club and are communicated to at appropriate times.
- In keeping with the success of our Senior sides, the Mini Section continues to increase in numbers and the coaches give of their time freely making tremendous efforts
- to ensure success the section, which continues to be the primary focus of youth rugby in the area.
